Most of the teachers do not know the subject they are 'teaching' they are young and do not have the qualifications for the subject they are teaching. The school does not prepare the students for grade 12 final exam. There are times that classes will go weeks without a teacher. We were once left without a physics teacher for nearly 2 months. They care very little about student's academic results. The school cares more about sports than acual academic time and students will spend alot of time on the rugby field instead of in class.
I agree that some studens has little respect for the staff as the school struggles to maintain discipline and order.
Some mornings when we had assembly the headmaster would make the studens sit on the cold and wet ground. (It had rained the night before ). They would make us sit on the wet ground only to tell us information about the rugby team. The school has a tuck shop but everything is overly expensive.
I'm in grade 10 and I joined Hoërskool Alberton in Grade 8, and it wasn’t my first choice, but I decided to make the best of it. The fees are quite high, yet a lot of money goes to sports, especially rugby, while classrooms, labs, and bathrooms are often neglected. Even the tuck shop is overpriced for learners.
The school has issues with discipline and behavior. Learners can be toxic, and some teachers react emotionally instead of handling situations logically. Teacher turnover and burnout also affect learning, with classes sometimes going weeks without a teacher yet students still expected to write tests. Punishments are often applied to whole grades instead of addressing the few responsible learners.
Academically, the school doesn’t always prepare students for life after school. Unless you’re a top academic achiever or a serious sports learner, support is limited, and subjects like math aren’t always taught effectively.
There is noticeable gender bias, with stricter rules and scrutiny for girls, while boys sometimes receive harsher punishments for the same behavior.
The school has a lot of land, but much of it is devoted to sports fields instead of classrooms, making some areas feel cramped. Overall, the school prioritizes sports over academics, leaving average learners with fewer opportunities to succeed.
The school has started to put sports over academics and the matric pass rate has droped dramatically, the school is very dysfunctional and unorganized with an increasing rate of fights
