A school obsessed with self image rather than student well-being
The administration does not care at all. I have seen first-hand incidents such as vaping, racial discrimination from teachers, substance abuse (in this case, alcohol consumption, nicotine sachets such as Zyns and also Dagga being smoked) and bullying.
A report of a grade 10 learner was filed about them vaping in the E-block ground floor infront of a prefect. I checked in with the learner who was reported and asked whether they had any repercussions and they said nothing happened whatsoever.
A teacher has reported that the E-block boys bathroom reeked of vape emissions and yet again, nothing happened.
An instance of racial discrimination that took place in September of 2024 occurred when a group of afrikaans boys exclaimed “These k-words walk so damn slowly” aloud. The learners around them when changing classes heard this and this incident was reported to the grade head. Again, nothing happened, no action was taken and no repercussions were dealt.
It seems like the school cares much more about the appearance of the students than the internal issues between the students. The appearance rules get treated with so much more importance than literal hate crimes. The staff responsible for checking the appearances are so much more pedantic about appearance and behave as if the students look like homeless people with cigarette burns, wounds, bruises and more. However, the most un-neat a person has looked in the school uniform is food spills on a tie or shirt.
Do not send your child to this high-school. The negligence among the staff should raise a cause for concern about their bias. Your child WILL get discriminated against, bullied and mic with the wrong groups and fall into devastating habits. How the school proceeds to parade itself as a dual-medium co-ed Christian Ethos school is amusing when the teachings of the Bible fall onto the deaf ears of the students and staff.
I'm torn between praising Midstream College for its academic excellence and criticizing the unacceptable behavior displayed by some teachers and students. On one hand, the school's faculty is comprised of knowledgeable and dedicated educators who genuinely care about their students' academic growth. The curriculum is well-structured, and the resources available are top-notch.
However, my experience has been overshadowed by the appalling behavior of some teachers and students. The lack of respect and empathy displayed by certain individuals is staggering. A disturbing incident that stands out was when a teacher, Jizell, physically pushed a student and her friends out of the tuck shop without even apologizing. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and sets a poor example for the students.
Furthermore, I've witnessed students and teachers alike displaying an air of entitlement, often disregarding basic human decency. For instance, students will occupy tables where other children have left their lunchboxes, without hesitation or regard for others' property. This lack of respect is not only unkind but also contradictory to the school's claims of being a Christian institution.
It's disheartening to see a school that prides itself on its Christian values fail to demonstrate even the most basic principles of kindness, empathy, and respect. I hope that Midstream College will take steps to address these issues and create a more inclusive, compassionate environment for all students. Until then, I can only give the school a mediocre rating, despite its academic strengths.I
