Entitled kids

I had two children who attended the school. I know that parents fight to get their children in the school. The school is amazing with holistic development of children. If you follow the rules that are there for a reason, the kids thrive. The reviews I have read now seem to be a few kids who are trying to follow a fashion trend and are influenced by maybe a disgruntled ex learner. I see a pattern. This school is the best in Johannesburg.

Experience at mhs

I am disappointed by the discrimination and inconsistency I’ve experienced at this school. At the start of the year, I was placed in an Afrikaans class despite choosing Zulu, and I was asked how I, as an Indian learner, could be doing Zulu. Subject choices should never be questioned based on race.and I believe the man reason they take advantage is cause phones parents allow , if it was you’d see what a day of mhs learner is like

Teachers make us sit on the floor because we fail to attend 9 lessons even though serving a valid reason on why we fail to attend ,they already categorise us as “the failure, the dumb boy,the dumb girl”

I’ve also been told my natural hair is “too bushy” and must be tied in a bun. When I did that, I was told not to use gel, only water. This makes it difficult to feel comfortable in my own skin. Lip gloss and Vaseline are taken away without clear reason, and on a rainy day I was questioned for wearing a school tracksuit because “it’s not winter,” despite the weather. The rules feel inconsistent and unfair.

MHS, where learners thrive

I have experienced a very friendly atmosphere where values are treasured and learners are developed holistically to bring out the best in every learner. A very dedicated management team who put the learners first. Learners thrive here. Great discipline principles

MHS MUST BE STOPPED

U CAN'T KEEP US SILENT

as a mhs learner I can't remain silent.i get that most schools have rules but mhs has gone too far within female rules like telling them afros are not allowed n depriving us of our culture I cannot leave in their shawdows n be treated like slaves hairbands being confiscated like it distracts us from learning hair being cut like it disturbs the teaching mhs is not only sexist but racist if afros are not allowed then why should other races such as indians be allowed with long color hair .MHS MUST BE STOPPED

MHS 🏴‍☠️

This might be long but so be it. This school is Racist and Biased. First of all, black girls and our afros. We literally get stopped and denied access into the school when we have our natural hair and teachers even say that we should cut it. Lets say i tie my afro into a puff, its still not allowed. While indians or whites and their natural hair can reach all the way to butt length. While our braids cant even pass our shoulders. First it was midback length and on a random day the school decided to change the rule without informing anyone and stopped MANY girls at the gate, took them to the office and cut their hair. Secondly, this is a story that happened to one of my grade mates. There was a time when a teacher called her into an empty classroom and locked the door. Then she scolded my grade mate about the length of her skirt and then took a scissor and told the girl that its either she cut the hem of the skirt to make it longer or she isnt leaving. Also, they confiscate things that they loose or take home to use for themselves. There are teachers that swear at learners, call them names, insult them and tell them that they will never make it far because of certain things like behavior. Teachers purposefully embarrass learners infront of their classmates, sometimes even for small mistakes that the learner makes. Also, they are male teachers who make sny comments about or to the girls and look at them in disgusting ways. This isnt only about the learners being bullied by teachers, but teachers bully each other as well. Its a very very toxic environment. About the Racist part. There was a time where me and my classmates were sitting in Afrikaans period and the teacher was marking tests and she gave us permission to whisper. All was going well till a few boys in my class spoke zulu to one another and she got angry. She started yelling saying "this is not your home" "if you want to speak those languages, go back to the locations and the townships, there you can be free" and a bunch of stuff like that. We tried reporting but no one did anything. Even when teachers swear at us, when we report, no one does anything. Teachers chase learners out of class and when a different teacher sees the learner outside without a class pass, they get accused of bunking and they dont even get a chance to explain themselves. And when its cold, girls are forced to suffer. Even if its drizzling but "the sun is out" girls are denied access to the school and their bags get taken. Girls not having short skirts is one rule i can understand but i dont understand the pants rule. Even if girls are allowed to wear pants and not tracksuits when its time for formal uniform that would be way better. Tote / side bags are not allowed and that also does not make sense if all teachers want their books and textbooks, where are we supposed to put them!!! The bathrooms are not cleaned and they blame it on learners and not taking care of them. MHS learners live in fear and all they need is a little more lenient and understanding staff. Staff also favor learners who get higher grades than others and that can also be very demotivating for the rest.
If you want to bring your child to MHS, id reconsider my options

This school sucks.

Before I start stating my points, I am a student writing this (12-17), and just because of my age, I truly hope you don't dismiss my concerns and complaints.. because they aren't just my own, they're from many many students who've experienced similar things.

1. Only students who have braids in their hair have to cut them, if they're "too long", people with straight hair don't have to go through this. Because it's ''natural'', but hair extensions for different hair types exist, really good wigs, clips and all. And they can blend in very well with natural hair. Will you go through every student's individual hair stands to look for extensions?
2. In majority of cases, students pay a hefty fee of roughly 500-700 rand to get their hair braided, only for you to make them chop it all off, despite their parents or themselves, spending their own hard earned money to make their children look decent and feel beautiful. (which in a few cases means less fortunate families may go without food for it.)
3. yet again, people with straight hair, don't go through this, and I don't think they should either, because they also spent time growing their hair out, on products and maintenance, which, in itself is also expensive.
4. I've observed a double standard. Students with very long, straight hair wear their hair in buns, to hide the length and make it abide by the rules, yet when a child with braids does it, they are stopped, have to undo their bun, and then if it's "too long" they get in trouble and have to, again cut it, which is deeply unfair.
5. Male students with mid length hair suffer similar problems, having fairly long hair should not be a problem, as long as they style it neatly, like females with long hair do too.
6. We are often taught in life orientation and other subjects, that all people, in any given situation of this sort, no matter appearance or body, should be treated with kindness and respect. Yet here we are.
7. There are also other concerns and questions I have. Will you make all students take off their shoes, at the gate, as one could easily sneak a small bottle of pills, a few cigarettes or other forms of drugs in them.
8. Will you search students undergarments, because they could, again, sneak those items in, and get through the metal detector with them, as they aren’t metallic and won't be detected?
9. Are you going to go through every student's water, and lunch to make sure there's nothing suspicious? Go though everything despite the fact there are over 1500 students at the school.

I'm not writing this to be disrespectful, and if it comes off as so, I deeply apologise. I'm only stating problems that I and many others have faced.

-yours sincerely, anonymous student.

THIS SCHOOL IS A PRISON AND NOT A SCHOOL

This school only cares about appearances, amongst black children, they always monitor our hair , shoes , skirts , the way we appear to them , even though that does not matter to other schools this is not good school because the teachers are very racist some even swear at learners or say hurtful things to learners. That's why most learners left the school it's because they treat black children like crooks and thugs ,meanwhile other colour's are allowed to do whatever they want , like all the Indians that girls in that school have very long hair , it's either their hair has highlights on it , on is naturally light brown they don't care but when it comes to a black girl s light brown hair the assume that it was dyed , and they start looking for evidence like baby pictures to see whether u dyed it or not , but when it comes to Indians they don't care. They always assume that all black children in that school smoke drugs and sneak in alcohol which is not fair because even Indians do the same but the don't care . Meaning that they are planting everything on black people

Do not go to Midrand High School

I left Midrand High and I have zero regrets. The rules placed on girls are far too harsh and in my opinion oversexualize them. Rules related to skirts and hair; skirts should be long which is fine because it a school after all ,but their reasoning for this length is so they don't get boys attention. Once at an assembly girls were told cases of sexual assault won't be take seriously if the skirt is not the length the school wants. Girls are subtly referred to as people that want the attention of boys. At that assembly girls were told we were unruly, wanted boys attention, should dress a certain way so we don't get sexually assaulted, but the boys weren't told the same thing. They weren't told not to sexually assault people. The issues of hair length;Girls are told to cut their braids if it passes the shoulder blades. They're forced to have short braids and are denied entry if they do not abide. They even stop learners from going to classes because of their hair. Education is stopped because of hair. Boys are also told to trim their afros which is to some extent anti-black; at some point girls were told the same. Boys can't have dreadlocks (again,a little anti-black if you think about it)It seems to me that the school and sgb cares more about appearance than it does about teachers leaving every year. In 2024 there were 3 history teachers and in term 2 of that year learners didn't have a history teacher until 2 weeks before exams started. In 2025 there were 2 history teachers. In 2025,an sgb member called a girl the B-word. In 2025 a learner was slapped by a teacher. All these show you that Midrand High does not care about the well being of their learners. They treat these children horribly and enforce harsh rules on them. If you love your child, send them to another school.

Hell on earth

My experience at Midrand High School has been extremely disappointing. Many learners feel unheard, unsupported, and emotionally drained. Instead of being a safe space for growth and education, the environment often feels negative and discouraging. Students’ mental health seems to be overlooked, and the pressure and treatment we receive can be overwhelming.

There is an excessive focus on appearance, especially hair, while more important issues like the quality of education and student well-being do not seem to receive the same level of attention. It often feels like image matters more than actual learning. Some teachers speak to learners in ways that feel disrespectful and hurtful, which lowers confidence and motivation.

School should be a place where learners feel valued, respected, and inspired to succeed. Unfortunately, that has not been the experience for many of us. Serious changes are needed to prioritize education, fairness, respect, and the mental health of students.

grade 8 my friend borrowed my book to do corrections...they took us to the office called our parents for a meeting....THE SCHOOL IS A NONSENSICAL RACIST SCHOOL BUT THEY WON'T SAY IT WITH THEIR MOUTHS BECAUSE THE RACISIM IS INSTITUTIONALIZED....they have cameras everywhere then they tell you its for teachers....the SGB, deputy principal and grade heads called my friends parents because he likes girls....that is why the school will never achieve a 100% pass rate...they care more about skinny pants or short skirts than actual academics

Behind The Pass Rate

There’s a different side to Midrand High School that people don’t always see. The school is often viewed as one of the best in Midrand, but in my experience, there are serious issues behind closed doors. Some teachers carry themselves with very high egos, and their attitudes toward learners and even parents can be concerning. On top of that, the school rules often feel unclear and inconsistently applied.

Last year, my register teacher treated me in a way that really affected me. I’ll admit I wasn’t a perfect student I had my moments but there were times she would blame me for things I didn’t even do. It felt like if something happened in class and I was present, I was automatically guilty. I remember being made to sit on the floor simply for asking a genuine question. There were also times I asked to use the bathroom and was refused, only for another learner to be allowed to go shortly after. I was told it was because of my “behaviour,” even when I was quiet and not causing any problems.

My English teacher also seemed to have an issue with me. She would send SMS messages to my parents almost every single day. It reached a point where even my mum questioned it and asked if the teacher had something personal against me because it just didn’t make sense. At first, I tried to ignore it and improve where I could, but the messages continued until Term 4. Eventually, I became so tired of it that I stopped interacting in her class completely. I would just sit quietly and focus on my work without asking for anything.

This year hasn’t been much better. I was once sick in class with a running nose, and despite it being obvious to everyone, my teacher refused to let me blow my nose. He wouldn’t even listen when learners tried to explain. It felt less about rules and more about control.

There’s more I could say, but this has been my personal experience. From the outside, everything may look perfect because of the pass rate, but my journey at this school has been far from easy.

“We Have Been Silent for Too Long“

Midrand High School is the worst school I have ever attended. It is not simply because it is a high school, but because of how learners are treated. The rules are unreasonable, and instead of focusing on our education, many teachers focus on girls’ hair and uniforms. How does our hair or wearing headbands disturb our learning? We go to school to learn, but instead, everything feels draining.

We cannot even ask for help. When we do, most teachers either ignore us or embarrass us in front of others, and then they wonder why learners keep failing. The school no longer feels safe. Every day when I come home, I cry because of the way teachers embarrass us and because of the bullying I experience for things I cannot change about myself.

When my parents go to the school and speak to the principal, he takes the teachers’ side without hearing the full story. Some teachers have started normalising swearing at learners. They insult us, talk badly about our parents, and even tell us to disrespect our mothers and fathers. It feels like some teachers want learners to fail on purpose.

I once asked my Maths teacher if I could finish writing my test because I had not been given enough time. He refused without hesitation. I told my English teacher that I did not understand what she was explaining, and instead of helping me, she insulted me and said she would make me fail for asking questions. Later, when I received my report, she had given me a Level 1, which was unfair. When I checked my corrected work with my classmates, I had answered everything correctly.

There was also a day when I fainted at school. My friends ran to inform the teacher so they could help me, even if it meant being late for class. The teacher told them to “fuck off” and called them a “piece of shit.” When my friends reported this to the principal, he still took the teacher’s side. They were even asked whether they were nurses or doctors, as if they were wrong for trying to help me. Some teachers accused me of pretending to faint, even though a doctor had written a letter confirming that I have a medical condition that causes fainting.

One teacher took my medication, even though my doctor had instructed me to keep it with me in case of an emergency. Instead of giving me a warning or requesting a letter, she searched my bag and accused me of taking drugs. She even touched and searched through the food my mother had prepared for me, checking if I had hidden drugs in it. She did not wash her hands, and I lost my appetite that day.

The school also does little to address bullying. Some teenagers who attended Midrand High School have taken their own lives because of bullying, and yet the school asks what they did to deserve it. My 16-year-old sister committed suicide because of bullying from both teachers and learners.

Parents, please think carefully before sending your child to this school. Many learners are unhappy and have been complaining for a long time. We have been silent for too long.

Midrand high experience

Probably one of the worst schools you can go to around midrand and im writing this as a learner, focuses alot on appearance rather than education, teachers overly strict for no reason but also alot of friendly teachers and staff. This school will have u feeling drained ash and it is not like what u see on Instagram, tiktok etc. They present themselves like the best school in the world and that is far from that, lowk need to humble themselves.boys bathrooms are more than 5 in the school only 2 are always open. Overall would not recommend.

ohh worst school! they care more about your appearance more than anything! education is good but damn at what cost? also you literally get deprived of your education when you don't adhere to what they WANT. by this I mean you will be stopped at the gate in the morning and denied access to go into the school. you will literally get stopped for issues like your braids being too curly tf?? or if your braids are too long by this I mean slightly passing your shoulder blades lol, they will get cut with a pair of scissors before you can get into the school. the length of your skirt? i don't even wanna go there lol. mind you we all try our best and adhere to the school code of conduct. The learners appearance is literally within reasonable limits but damn they WILL make you have a miserable time there. they want us to adhere to their rules but WILL not hear out our grievances we have as learners like changing the rules last minute and expecting learners to suddenly adapt to this when it's something that has been allowed for yearssss. they don't tell you in advance also. like a year before but they tell you today and expected everyone to adhere by tomorrow!! sester ola at the gate makes everything worse sana!

Life of a learner in Midrand high school

As a learner at Midrand High School, I can no longer remain silent about what truly happens inside this school. On social media, the school presents itself as successful and disciplined But behind that image, many of us are told that our Afro hair is too long, they tell us that we can't do edges nor silk our hair back with styling but white girls can, Indian girls and colored girls can, we are told not to wear headbands and hair clips as black girls but girls from a different race can... Boys are told to cut their hair short, they are also told not to have Freeforms and Natural dreads but boys from a different race can keep their long and cut and style however they want, parents don't be fooled by the matric pass rate

What happens in MHS?

Good day to whom it may concern

‎I am a learner at MIDRAND HIGH SCHOOL and I can testify against the recent complains that other students have made against the school. What happens at MHS is Abuse of power disguised as discipline. The staff at MHS treats learners like prisoners, constantly telling them their skirt are to short biased on your physique, which is an incontrollable factor, and constantly telling boys to shave knowing very well it's human nature to grow hair. We understand that these are rules that many other schools have but there are rules that go above the code of conduct. Learners are to have specific shoelaces, shoulder length hair, knee length skirts,no hairbands or any other hair accessories except for ribbons. This school has prevented us from being our own individuals. We can't even wear tracksuits when it rains, we are forced to wear summer uniform regardless which I find unfair. In this school ONLY BOYS are allowed to wear pants unless there's a medical condition. Why should we be told  what not to wear and what to wear? The staff treats not only the learners but parents as well in a disgusting manner. I cannot further emphasize how embarrassing it is to be speaking to the staff in the offices. They don't not have respect for our parents. I ask that this reaches everyone including parents who would like to bring their children here.
‎DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO GO TO MHS.

‎Yours faithfully
‎MHS learner

How bad midrand high is

I am a midrand high student and everything in midrand high may seem so good, everything is great about them but no one understand what's going on inside the school wall. We are all stopped at the gate for the littlest things, like for boys if they don't wear a tie, belt, long/wrong hair, wrong school uniforms or didn't shave, they are stopped at the gate even if they were early for school, for girls they are stopped at the gate because of hair, hairstyle, hair colour, hair ties, headbands, wrong school uniforms, short skirts, and the thing about our skirts is that we are forced to write skirts and not pants and as a humans right girls should have the opinion to write pants or skirts but midrand high school does not allow that. When students are late for school they are stopped at the gate told to walk up to the main gate so they can take away our bags and we carry our books for the whole day until after school. One day when it was really cold but still summer they stopped so many people at the gate just because they were wearing tracksuit now we must suffer more? The one day last year my hair was tied in a pony tail and my hair is long until my back and one of the teachers stopped me and said your hair is too long mean while that's my natural hair and my classmates were fighting for me. It's funny because our school has such old rules which doesn't exist to any other school because that generation has died and our generation is now in style. We are only allowed to go out of class with a class pass which most of our teacher don't have they either give us a random object and tell us to go then we end up getting stopped by different teachers and telling us that we are bucking. Let's talk about other high school, so many high schools expect midrand high allows phones, hair ties, different styles different uniforms example weather and summer uniforms, headbands, they have an opinion weather to wear pants or skirts, please can someone change midrand high school!! We want our rights back!!

Midrand high behind the matric results

Midrand High School appears respectable from the outside, but many people are blinded by that image and don’t see what really happens inside. The main focus often feels like appearance rather than education. Hair, skirt length, beards, and uniforms seem to matter more than actual learning.

Students are constantly monitored for how they look instead of being supported academically. Rules about appearance are enforced strictly and sometimes harshly, while real educational concerns don’t receive the same urgency. This creates an environment where learners feel controlled rather than guided.

midrand high is bad

in this school, colour matters. they assume that all black learners are bad students and favour all those who are not black. they stop your for your appearance, like the length of your hair should not pass your shoulders. as if our hair cannot grow beyond that. black girls skirts should be by their knees and if not , it will be seen as us “showing off our bodies” but any other skin colour may pass , even if their skirts are short.

Inside the walls of Midrand High School

As a learner at Midrand High School, I can no longer remain silent about what truly happens inside this school. On social media, the school presents itself as successful, disciplined, and prestigious. But behind that image, many of us experience something very different.
This school focuses more on how we look than on our education. Black learners are constantly stopped at the gate and questioned about everything — the length of our skirts, our hairstyles, our hair colour — even when we are within reasonable limits. Hair does not disturb education. A braid does not affect marks. Natural hair colour does not disrupt learning. Yet we are treated as if our appearance is a problem that needs constant correction.
What makes it worse is that these rules do not seem to be enforced equally. Non-Black learners are often allowed to pass freely with similar or more noticeable “violations,” such as shorter skirts or longer hair. Meanwhile, Black girls are told no headbands, no certain hairstyles, no longer braids, no natural brown tones — our hair must always be black. We are forced to remove natural hair colours while White and Indian learners are allowed to keep their brown, ginger, or lighter shades. It begins to feel less like discipline and more like discrimination.
There was also an incident that clearly shows how unfairly situations are handled. One day, my friend and I were in the bathroom when one of the heads came in and asked for our class pass. We explained calmly that our teacher was a floating teacher and had not given us a class pass. Instead of listening to our explanation, she immediately assumed we were bunking and took us to her office.
When she called our parents, she did not explain the situation truthfully. She did not mention that we had told her about the floating teacher. She did not say that we had tried to explain ourselves. Instead, she presented it as if we were deliberately skipping class and being dishonest. She spoke in a way that made it seem like we were guilty from the start, leaving out key parts of the story that would have shown we had a valid reason for not having a pass. By omitting our explanation and framing the situation as misconduct, she created a false impression that damaged our credibility with our parents.
We were not given a fair chance to defend ourselves before assumptions were made. That is what made the situation hurtful — not just the phone call, but the fact that our voices did not matter.
The teachers often make us feel unsafe, uneasy, and insecure. They point out our flaws and insecurities publicly, yet when we try to defend ourselves, it is labelled as disrespect. If we speak up, we are punished. If we stay quiet, the behaviour continues.
There is also clear favouritism toward learners who perform well academically. While academic excellence should be encouraged, it should not determine who is treated with fairness and dignity. Every learner deserves respect, not only those who improve the school’s statistics.
The school emphasises anti-bullying policies, yet many learners go home crying. Some are bullied for their looks, and instead of protection, they feel blamed or humiliated further. The environment becomes manipulative — when you report an issue, it often feels like the school tries to shift the blame onto you, even if you are completely innocent.
The longer we stay silent, the more this continues. A high pass rate does not erase the experiences happening inside these walls. A strong reputation does not excuse unfair treatment.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for equal treatment, respect, and the right to feel safe and heard in our own school.

Concerns about fairness and well-being at Midrand High

Midrand High School has academic strengths, but the environment may negatively impact students' mental health and well-being. The school has been criticized for inconsistent rule application, favouritism, and overly strict policies (e.g., bans on tote bags, umbrellas, flasks, and restrictions on personal grooming). Limited sports opportunities and unfair disciplinary actions contribute to a challenging atmosphere. Parents and students should carefully consider these factors when evaluating the school's suitability.

Midrand high experience

Good school in academics. But the code of conduct is affecting learners...learners seem to be obsessed with hair and skirt length because of the fear of their bags being taken or their hair/skirt being cut. The school is also racist. They have a habit of changing rules last minute without warning the learners too

Lovely learners, horrible management

The learners are absolutely the best, but the management is horrible. Racism is a huge challenge. Teachers have been admitted to mental health institutions due to mental health challenges. The learners are lovely, but working there can take its toll on your mental health.

The food at the tuck shop is horrible.

The teachers are lovely people. They are dedicated and going the extra mile but they are not appreciated by the management.

Worst school ever

It's the worst school ever. They are dictators. Girls are not allowed to wear school tracksuits even when it's cold (during rainy days in summer) and boys are made to feel like there is something wrong with them if their beard grows. Instead of allowing them to embrace the changes in their bodies, they are shaved by a scissor and embarrassed in front of peers. They are a government school but they sell textbooks to students, and at the end of the year they ask for the books to be returned, why would you demand such if books are bought by parents. The admin old lady is so rude and disrespectful to parents. We cannot stop taking our children there because we don't have a choice. Can the department of education do something please

Summery of MPHS

This school is honestly the most pathetic school ever. The staff treat the learners like they are Nothing but little worthless peasants. The principle on the other hand is very racist and degrades everyone like she is better than us. She said "You guys are not private school material" and that they don't need us there. They are focused on academics but don't want to help the learners when assistance is needed. The structure of the school looks utterly disgusting, they are building more and more to try and make the school "better" but it's acually making the school look more horrific than ever. The teachers don't social distance and they come close to u when talking to u like they are more human than us. My advice send your child somewhere else If u really love your child and want them to be happy.

my experience at MPHS

midland primary and high is one of the worst institutions. they are degrading, racist, the health conditions of the bathroom is poor by them being racist I specially mean the principal of the school who I quote says "that us black students belong in unsanitary shacks and we are not worth our parents money" this something us children receive every single time at the school. Not only is it affecting us, most educators at that institution treat us students like we are worthless, stupid , they are condescending they remind us of our insecurities. being at mphs has only made me depressed and made me lose my self esteem, if you would like to enter mphs do it at your own risk of mental health.
