A concerned former black student

A school which provides reverse racism but tells students that they don't know anything about racism. This school doesn't allow girls with straight hair tease their hair because they are not "black". A girl with straight long hair is not allowed to have braids because she's trying really hard to be "black". There are stricter rules for girl's hair when you hair is straight but if you've got an afro very little rules apply for example: your shoulder length hair must be tied up but you massive afro can be let loose. I personally feel like that is unfair. This school has RCL meetings trying to give so decision making to the students but these suggestions are taken into consideration.

Certain things Definitely need to improve at this school.

Kimberley Girls' High is above average from what anyone would expect a high school to be like. It is a home away from home for boarding students and an overall family extension for anyone who enters the gates of the school. I am a former student at the school (Class of 2018)and I will proudly say that I don't regret my mothers decision to have me enrolled there.

The school offers classes starting from grade 8 (Standard 6) all the way to grade 12 (Standard 10) and is very affordable considering all that it has to offer. Currently the school fees stands at only R15280 for the whole 2020 academic year and there are various payment options to lay off the pressure of paying all at once.

The staff at the school are very welcoming and the teaching staff are immensely dedicated to ensuring that no student is left behind when it comes to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement(CAPS)prescribed by the national department of education South Africa.

My favorite thing about going to the school was the atmosphere created by the teachers and staff to make sure that the girls' were comfortable with learning and confident in every venture they attempt to explore. May it be sports, arts and crafts or academics, the school works on a work and reward basis to make sure that every girls hard work does not go unnoticed and also to motivate girls' who have some form of self doubt.

The school offers a range of extracurricular activities such as Debating,Squash,Swimming,Hockey,Soccer,Choir,Chess (And even has a giant chess board on the grounds that the girls' can indulge in at break time)Aquatics,Tennis and many others that would not fit into this text if I named them all. And the interesting part is that all sports and cultural activities are offered on the school grounds and school hostel which is all in close proximity, meaning that the safety of each girl is guaranteed at all times when attending to school related activities.

There are dedicated security staff hired to make sure that all the girls are safe at all times during school hours as well as a traffic guard to control traffic before and after school so that traffic on the school grounds runs smoothy when girls' are picked up and dropped off.

There is a tuck shop at the disposal of every girl who would like to grab a quick snack or full meal at break time. And also a uniform shop where the full Kimberley Girls' High summer and winter uniform can be bought.

In the summer terms one, three and four the girls in grades 8 to 11 are expected to wear a dark green fitted school skirt and a white short sleeved button up shirt with a green school emblem on the left breast side of the clothing piece along with a black and green stripped blazer. Of course the grade 12 girls match the look, however the skirt they are expected to wear is black instead of green the same going for the shirts emblem and collar which are black. The blazers are standard, unless the girls are awarded according to their academic, sport or cultural activity effort and achievement.

In winter (Term 2) all girls' wear black slacks instead of skirts or can choose to wear black stockings underneath the expected colour skirt. Along with a tie and long sleeved white shirt paired with a black jersey and school blazer.

All subjects are offered in English and students have the option of choosing either Afrikaans or Setswana as a second additional language in grade 8 all the way to grade 12.

In grade 9 the students choose 7 subjects that they will do in the following grade 10 year. Subjects range from Business studies, Computer applications Technology, Physical sciences, Life sciences, History, Geography, etc. But have to do English, Math/Math lit, Life Orientation and Afrikaans or Setswana as compulsory subjects.

School hours are from 7:30am to 13:45 on Mondays to Thursdays and 07:30 to 13:15 on Fridays. This allows the students some time to have a life out of school that they can enjoy with immediate family and friends, not forgetting to do their homework though.

Enrolling your child at Kimberley Girls' High school is by far the best investment a parent could make for their daughters future. The girls' are equipped with all the necessary tools to survive and prosper in their lives after high school.
