I have never seen a school so obsessed with appearances yet so careless about its students’ actual education, safety, and well-being.
Let’s start with the fact that Hillview still clings to outdated, whitewashed standards. You can’t wear your hair the way you want no braids, no dreads, no cornrows, no styled baby hairs. It’s 2025, and they’re still policing Black hair. Ridiculous.
Now onto the teachers. Some try I’ll give them that. But most? They don’t teach, don’t show up, or just hand you work and expect you to figure it out on your own. And this isn’t just for random subjects it’s the core ones like Maths, English, and Afrikaans. If you’re struggling, too bad. Don’t expect help unless you’re in matric.
The school claims to “care” about its learners, but that’s a lie. If you’re bullied, assaulted, or failing, don’t expect support. Hillview has made it clear multiple times: they do not care about their students’ well-being. What they do care about is how you look and what you wear.
Let’s talk about the classrooms — they’re falling apart. Broken windows, broken chairs, broken tables, broken railings. But somehow, they have enough money to buy buses. Make it make sense.
Sports? Barely alive. You’ll find netball, soccer, and basketball (and don’t even get me started on the girls’ basketball team — I was there, it’s a mess). There’s choir and cheerleading, but that’s about it. The energy is gone, the spirit is gone, and clearly the effort is gone too.
Teachers don’t even last here. Every year, 2–3 teachers leave, and it takes forever to replace them. When they do bring in a substitute, that person usually does absolutely nothing. Just there for attendance.
And the way some teachers treat learners? Disgusting. I’ve seen teachers degrade and humiliate students, drag them by their hair or arm, even hit them. And unless you’re one of the “top 10,” don’t expect any extra help or kindness.
The food is horrible dry, sometimes moldy, tasteless, and overpriced. The tuckshop is only good for overpriced snacks, nothing else. Bring your own lunch if you value your stomach.
School events? Don’t even bother. Unless you’re in grade 8 or 9 and still have hope, don’t waste your money. Every event is overhyped and underdelivered. Empty promises of “fun” that turn into disappointment every single time. And of course, overpriced food on top of that.
Then there’s the chaos schedules changing every other week, rules flipping overnight. One week school ends at 1:55, the next it’s 2:30. Even this year, some students had their timetables completely mixed up because the school “didn’t know how to act.” Pure disorganization.
And the bathrooms? Horrifying. Out of five stalls, expect only two to work. No toilet paper half the time, no soap, broken sinks. For a place that claims to teach hygiene and discipline, they can’t even keep their own facilities clean.
In short:
Hillview High School is falling apart physically, academically, and morally. The school that should be shaping futures is instead draining every bit of motivation and joy out of its students. If you’re a parent thinking of sending your child here… don’t. If you’re a student here I feel for you.
I will come back in 2 years. When I’m done with matric if things has changed for now. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL AT ALL TIMES. STAY AWAY, I REPEAT, STAY AWAY
To be severely honest, hillview used to be a bad school but the more rules where added the more it's improving, learners with bad behavior is severely decreasing and it's honestly very impressive. I as a hillview learner I'd suggest this school for your child. The teachers are splendid and do their job very well!
The school has been improving.hillview learner are kind and don't bully.academically it is amazing and teachers are good at teaching.school learner are passing.the school food is amazing and not expensive compared to other schools.and they have buses learners can take for free. I recommend this school for your child!
With all due respect, I don't recommend the school to anyone. The school is corrupt beyond knowledge.
Learners are always smoking, the teachers don't stick to the English medium policy, which is unfair for other students who only understand English. (it doesn't matter if they're white they won't magically know Zulu, tswana or pedi).
Teachers don't even care about students mental health, they don't even watch their tone or launauge while speaking to the learners which is actually unfair and can cause suicidal thoughts.
(yah let that sink in)
Then ontop of all that how do you let the teachers fight with learners? How do you see that as a professional trade towards other school.
And also you have cameras all around school premises, yet you use them for useless things like tracking down people who twerk on social media 🤦♀️, before you look for so called internet stars look for problems within the school honestly you guys suck at protecting your kids and yourselves.
I haven't been so depressed at any school before in my whole life.
Hillview took the gawd damn cake. Yoh. No. This school needs to be shut down as soon as possible. And I'm taking this to heart.
Bounus paragraph: this is regarding a specific teacher. Before you kick out a learner in class for sleeping as them why? I hope that's not hard for you to do😘
Hillview already lacks in so many departments, but the best they can do is actually listen to thier students instead of scolding at them.
Students have been asking for more classes(subjects), better uniform i.e black pants and functional bathrooms(boys).
One of the main problems is not of the school, but the students themselves I and many others believe that bad students should be expelled not suspended.
Hillview high school takes the trophy when it comes to corruption and horrible behavior its a toxic learning environment where drugs , theft , bullying are at its prime and if you assume the School will get better you are awfully mistaken hillview will only get worse because of that principal. parents/learners don't enrol your children there because that would be the beginning of a never ending nightmare.
The principal doesn’t care about the students all she cares about is work and achieving the pass rate without even putting the children first and the educational system is bad the classes aren’t worth the money we pay for school fees
Firstly the principal is definitely appointed by mistake.she chooses the security team over the safety and comfortability of learners. She is one-sided and definitely isn't qualified or trained to handle a school. She is exactly like the learners. This school definitely needs a new leader or it must shut down. Hillview is a very bad school. Do not take your kids there
Very corrupt and Wild school. Students do as they want. They running the school as if there are no school rules. You get bullies. Physical and cyberbullling. They don't wear their uniform in a proper manner.
