Concern Regarding Grade 1 Handover Incident – 17 February 2026
Dear Mr Pretorius,
I am writing to formally express my deep concern regarding a distressing incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, 17 February 2026, involving the Handing over of Grade 1 learners.
It was clearly communicated to parents that the Grade 1 drama session would take place from 13h30 to 14h00. However, on the day, the children were only released from their classrooms at 14h30. During those 30 minutes of silence, there was no communication from the school or the teachers explaining the delay.
For a parent, a 30-minute window where a child is unaccounted for is agonizing. In my case, this was particularly traumatic as I have had first-hand experience with a relative's child being kidnapped/lost from school. This delay acted as a severe trigger, leading to the terrifying thought that my child had gone missing under the school’s care.
The safety and predictable handing over of young learners is a non-negotiable responsibility. I urge the school administration to:
Investigate the cause of yesterday’s communication breakdown and delayed release.
Review and strengthen the current "handing over" policy to ensure children are never left in a state of administrative limbo without parental notification.
Implement a protocol for immediate communication (via SMS or official app) should any after-school activity run over its scheduled time.
I look forward to hearing how the school plans to rectify this procedure to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all parents.
