Grade 8 learners

Unbecoming behaviour of senior learners

My grade 8 child is complaining of senior vapers in the school toilets, preventing them from using the toilets during school hours🤷🏼‍♂️

Not terrible but not horrible

A lot of the teachers seem to have anger issues towards every students and some of them are the best teachers you will ever meet so it's really up to luck on how your academic experience will go however the students are generally welcoming and you will have no problem fitting in as there are many different groups to choose from.
There Is a lot of academic pressure from most teachers.
Even though they claim that they "Only want you're best" they often expect the whole class to be straight A students and they tend to not care about embarrassing you about your academic level.

There is a big problem with vaping in Fairmont but you can expect that from any school however the way they try to deal with problems just causes more problems.
For example in 2022 they tried to address the vaping problem and thought it would be a good idea to not allow students to go the bathroom at all during lesson times meaning that you could only use the bathroom before school, during breaks and after school so if you needed to go out of those times its tuff luck for you so overall pretty bad school 8/10

Fairmont is the best

We have been in Fmhs for 3yrs. Excellent school. Children are taught to stand on their own two feet, they are taught to be leaders, they have opinions and are allowed to voice them. These are our up coming leaders. Fairmont allows children with many talents to join them, not only those with rugby and netball skills.
We are happy .....

Just as good as an USA School

I've read some of the negative reviews. All I can say is that those reviews are obviously written by disgruntled pupils/parents.
In their one sided view, the problem is always the school, never them self or their child.
So let me start with my own review:
My eldest finished Grade 12 last year and the other is now busy with Grade 12.
In short, I am very happy with what I experienced as a Fairmont parent over several years.
How does Fairmont compare to other schools?
I can only compare Fairmont to some top rated USA schools that my children attended for 6 years before we moved back to South Africa.
The verdict is: Fairmont compares very well with top rated schools in USA, in fact in certain instances, I would rate Fairmont higher.
I read some reviews about vaping. Sure, vaping is a problem in most schools in Durbanville, and those that don't think so is living in a dream world...
I know that Fairmont is doing its best to identify vaping pupils.
I can also categorically say that there is less drinking in Fairmont compared to some of the other schools in Durbanville. I won't name them.
So the bottom line is: it depends what your criteria is and whether you have sour grapes or not.
Would I send my children again to Fairmont if I could choose again: For sure!

A decent school with a problematic side

Fairmont is very much your basic high school but has a quite problematic side. I and many others have dealt with homophobic comments from other students and when brought to the teachers was not taken seriously. A specific incident is when a friend of mine was called the f slur by a matric whilst walking down the halls and when we reported it and said what class the boy was going into the vice principal told us "we can't do anything cause he'll bully you". This school claims to be a progressive school who will take students concerns seriously when in reality they really don't. The extreme pressure that is put on the students is also a huge problem. Students are constantly compared to others based off of academic skill and are expected to achieve high grades no matter what circumstances you are dealing with. I was medically booked off of school for a portion of the year and most of my teachers expected me to catch up everything in an extremely short period of time whilst still having to excel academically. Teachers in Fairmont are either amazing people who take their job seriously and make an impact on students or are unprofessional, unorganized people who are clearly only there for their paycheck. I have dealt with so many teachers who are extremely unorganized with their teaching which affects students academically, and teachers who have unpredictable outbursts and lash out on students. An example is a teacher bursting into tears due to a students performance because it wasn't up to their standards. The school also has a new policy of not allowing students to use the restrooms during classes unless they have a doctors note because of a vaping issue, which personally is a poor approach to the problem. It is a basic right of a student to be allowed to use the bathroom. I know students have also dealt with racism by students which teachers didn't take seriously and teachers themselves saying racial remarks but I personally cannot speak on this issue as I am a white student who cannot represent a problems poc students sadly deal with. Fairmont isn't a terrible school, I have met amazing people and teachers and have had a decent time so far but I think they sweep their problems under the rug to be a perfect school in the public eye.

Fairmont great High School

Fairmont is in my view a great school, my eldest attended Fairmont and finished about 3 years ago. The amazing child/adult she became in the studying and working industry is due to the fact that she attended a fantastic High School Fairmont. My youngest is now attending there and even with Covid and at home studying as never felt alone or not able to do well on her report. The online study support of the teachers have been amazing during Covid trying times. The principal keeps us parents and students constantly informed via different platforms. The InTouch portal recently launched is super great. Absolutely informative & helpful. I am a proud Fairmont supporter since 2012/2013 and continue to believe it is one of the Best High School's in the Western Cape!!! Stand Fast!

Fairmont Is Far More Bigoted Than You Would Think

My Fairmont experience was somewhat appaling at times. I experienced severe homophobia at the hands of teachers, my close friends who are black or POC experienced almost weekly micro-agressions and I once even had a teacher endorse **********. (I wish I was making this up) Mental Health was made a mockery of and disregarded so frequently that in 2018 the school house that put on a harmful and gross satire set in a psychiatric hospital won best play in the schools performance competition, despite SEVERAL students calling the inappropriate content to attention. When sexual misconduct took place on school grounds it was completely disregarded by all involved and when a case of domestic abuse was taken to the councelor, the victim was told "to go to a social worker because it's not my problem". Keep in mind that this person had taken photos of abuse related bruises and the councilor literally couldn't be bothered. Teachers regularly would hear racial or homophobic slurs being shouted across courtyards and completely disregard them to the extent that all minorities more or less understood one thing: Fairmont has not got your back. I suppose, all I can say in conclusion is that Fairmont is not a school for anyone other than the white, sporty and straight. If you happen to be a parent reading this with a child who doesnt fit those precise standards please reconsider for their wellbeing. They will not make it through their five years without some form of negative experience- guaranteed.

Need to change

As a recent matriculant of the school I can honestly the last 5 years were the worst years i have ever experienced. Now many may assume it was because I may have been a "bad child " but I was a straight A student and never got into any trouble. However Fairmont is a money oriented school and cares more about its outer reputation than how the students veiw or feel in the school. I had the current principal threaten my mom as well as one of their counselors make false accusations and give out my confidential information to other without my permission. After ending up in hospital twice from the lack of safety at their sports days they took 30 minutes to contact my parents after i passed out and denied her request to call an ambulance even tho i was fitting.
Throughout the Covid lockdown many teachers barely took time to do little more that send excessive amounts of work through with almost no help or guidance. I also faced a rather nasty experience of cyber bullying from one of the students at Fairmont and the deputy principal merely brushed it off and said it was out of thier control. If i could go back and change my decision to go to the school i would in a heartbeat. I honestly would not even recommend this school to my greatest enemy.
If Fairmont continues down this path more and more kids will pull out and the school will continue to contribute to the negative impacts of poor education and social welfare.

Fairmont is a great school

I see ppl saying “ur child will probs start sinking weed”
I have personally seen kids being asked to leave the premises if caught with any substance not allowed on school property
Fairmont is a great school, teachers are very involved with the kids as teachers and as listeners when we need them
I’m currently a learner there and have been for 3 years and it’s been the best 3years of my life
Sport culture and academics all play a big role together at school
Fairmont is a place to learn and make friends
Ur child will enjoy fairmont guaranteed

Average

Fairmont recognises a select few people per grade for their talents and then proceeds to make use of these students for every opportunity that comes along. The potential for other students to be recognised as equally if not more talented is not considered in this school - they play it safe.
There is absolutely no school spirit, except for one day a year during interschools athletics. If you are looking to attend a high school that contains students who are proud to be there - Fairmont is not the school for you.
There are very few teachers at Fairmont who will make a profound impact on your life, the others are either uninvolved or horrible to be around.
No school is perfect but I didn’t have a great time at Fairmont.

Teachers Could Do Better

My experience with the school had a lot of ups and downs. A standard portion of the teachers know what they're doing in terms of education but have no idea how to communicate genuinely with their students on a more personal level when they're in need of someone to turn to which I think should be a very important aspect to being an educator; whether in primary school, high school or university. Teaching is a calling. However, the teachers who are emotionally available and are there for their students are pure, absolute angels and desperately deserve a lot more recognition which I unfortunately cannot give here.

Good, has downsides but that’s expected

Decent school. Your kid will probably start smoking weed here but that never hurt anybody. Students all feel the need to rebel. The teachers are really good at teaching, but lack children experience, especially the new student teachers. The school has quality equipment and facilities so it is a great place to send your child.

Fairmont High School - so amazing!

I am a student at Fairmont High School. Whilst the fees are not extremely expensive and it is a public school, it is an extremely good school. The staff are passionate about teaching and make sure that we do as well as we possibly can. The school has an indoor pool, gym and a student centre with Olympic style flooring. We have various sports, from hockey, rugby, cricket and swimming to basketball, softball, volleyball and mountain biking. We have great school spirit and great discipline - they work hard to eliminate bullying. Our school tuckshop is an external business that sells hot meals such as pizza and sandwiches, healthy meals such as salads and wraps and your normal sweets and drinks. We also have a security guard who always stays at the school. I thoroughly enjoy my school experience and I never feel unsafe.
