Toxic School

The school is toxic, to say the least. Children are bullied by teachers and fellow students alike. Three months in the school and my child already traumatized.
Complaints are ignored, emails are ignored.
Think carefully before you fork out the piles of money for registration fees and buy expensive school clothes. You'll be looking for another school pretty soon.

Never again.

I went to this school for 5 years a couple years ago and am still dealing with the effects from the school I went from start to finish in the first two years it was amazing and fun, but it went downhill very quicky there was constant favoritism when it came to students and students that were not their favorites where not treated equal this favoritism continued until matric, the teachers had favorites themselves and it was not a pleasant experience I regret going here. while their where some teachers who were amazing and brilliant a lot of them where not. many Students were caught with illegal substances many times and yet all they got was suspended multiple times, I do not recommend you send your children here it will not have a positive impact on your child and may affect their mental health and self-worth. to this day I still feel dumber than everyone else and like I will never achieve what I am attempting. while I did make friends, I will never forget there is a lot of people there I never want to see again due to this treatment.

Traumatised

As a parent, this school has been the worst experience ever in all my kids schooling years. My kids previously attended great supportive schools and I never got an email or a complaint ever. Its only been 2 years here and my word, I wish I had known better.

Edenglen High School is a HORRIBLE school.

Edenglen High School is a HORRIBLE school.

I attended this school for 3 months in grade 8 before I moved to another school. I was extremely unhappy there.

Teachers would curse in front of their students while teaching.

I was called out and humiliated by having to explain why I did not attend school due to personal reasons, the teachers would constantly pick on me.

I had chosen about 3 extra curricular activities to participate in, but head prefects pushed and insisted I participate in more, even after I had said “no” multiple times. My name was written on the team lists by these prefects. My name was involuntarily written down for about 3 extra activities on top of the ones I had voluntarily chose.

I was shut down and almost manipulated when I viewed my opinions. The teachers constantly made me feel uncomfortable.

All in all, I do *not* recommend Edenglen High School.

Progressive State School

The school principal takes pride in his school and manages it very well. The school grounds are well kept. The technology at the school is very advanced with a highly qualified HOD.The school has an in-house minimum 55 percent pass requirement. Children who drop below this level are given immediate support with free extra lessons. Variety of sports and extra murals, learners are encouraged to take atleast 1 extra mural per term. The buildings are maintained. The school runs creative recycling projects, like the ecobrick project. They are also striving towards ongoing initiatives to become a greener school.

Student review.

It’s a good school with typical high school drama but consistently tries to improve its leaner’s life’s, acedemics, mental health and extra murals.it just needs better funding and regular attention from the government.

Edenglen high school isn't the same

What is going on Edenglen? Your standards and management is not the same. It's time the government looks into this school and takes the required action.

fix this school for the kids please

this school is so toxic and doesn't care about it's learners or their mental health, the teachers act as if they're doing us a favor when in fact THEYRE DOING THEIR JOBS.Our school comes out at 14:45 and we only have 1 35minute break...DO NOT send your kids here...also there's a whole lot of homophobia, fatphobia, sexism, racism etc.. in this school

Overall representation

Legal action

This good for nothing school keeps attempting to delete negative reviews so that no one can see their true colors. If my review didn't mean anything they wouldn't have taken their time to get all the negative reviews deleted. I wont mention the full story cause of legal reasons. But if I hear one more time that some of your wonderful teachers are talking about me to other teachers from other schools, I will take you to and your pathetic school to court for defamation of character. Don't test me. So far I've got alot of evidence to hold against you, so you never know when you'll get a letter for prosecution. So dont ever undermine me. Fellow student teachers, be careful, they do not take well to other student teachers and will make your life a misery if you don't conform to their low standard of what they call morals.

Edenglen from a student's perspective.

I attended 2 other high schools before this and simply kept looking to find the school I fitted in. I have now attended Edenglen High for multiple year now and I have enjoyed my time there, I might even say I have loved it.

The teachers are strict in terms of the rules(which is good) and honestly help a learner when they are struggling. The teachers are always doing extra to simply help us students. The teachers provide extra lessons for those who need or want the extra help.

The extramural activities are vast and there is an activity for everyone. From debating to drama plays to netball and soccer. There are many other activities such as public speaking, softball, swimming and not to mention chess.

I have personally grown drastically due to this school and I am exited to know about the continued opportunities that this amazing school will provide will.

Edenglen in a nutshell

I love the place there are some amazing teachers that will go over and above for their students. The only criticism I have is that the management structure coming straight from the department doesn't allow for the school to act on certain issues as swiftly and justly as they should be able to. Unfortunately the department of education also seem to be so far removed from how a school should be it's ridiculous. I love the school and most of the teachers and it has played such an amazing role in my development.

Toxic

As a student in edenglen I would say the school doesn’t have a good ambiance
The toxicity levels among us the students is really high
The head of grade is more focused on sports then academics
The school isn’t safe as students do fight and hurt one another and the only thing that happens to them is being told to not do that again

The education the school isn’t bad but some teachers are stereotypical and racist but in all the school isn’t that bad

Shambles

This school provides nothing short of a toxic environment for its learners and upper management should be ashamed of this. There are no traces of discipline nor respect left in this school; students will openly break both school rules and laws without any regard and the only punishment they will face from the school is being asked not to do it again, I have witnessed this on multiple occasions. Beyond that, there is clear favouritism when it comes to sports and the like, it is not only clear but appears to be encouraged. The school is a mess and quite frankly an embarrassment, the bathrooms are a constant mess and just a smoker's hangout, how can you host other schools with bathrooms in such a state?

Depression

I am currently in this school and the atmosphere is not one that a school should be... they have given all students a bar-code and number as if we just products in a store getting ready to be sold.
It’s more of a factory than a place to learn and live...
the control the school has, makes us all dread going to school.
It’s not good for any of our mental health.
We are human, treat us like it.

Horrible school

As a former student from start to finish i can acknowledge on the the improvement of security and general safety. Started in 2015 and that was one hell of a year , lots of chaos and zero discipline around the school it was a free for all , Boys toilet was a smoking room, bunking classes by hanging by the stairwell was a norm as well as the "gym" that used to be used for substitution. All of that changed over the course of my 5 year stay at the school and i must say was implemented in a very smooth and gradual way as one would actually not realise how much things have improved with cameras and security guards being around until you reminisce and look back at the earlier years for me the most obvious benefit of this was a better experience in the toilet ,went from being a make-shift cuban cigar lounge to having the occasional smoker. Now that i have mentioned the only good time for the real reason behind my 2 star rating. Straight forward and honest , there was a very rich undertone of Racism in that school that was subtle enough to not notice at first glance but upon reflection , it would leave a bad after taste. The Principle used to teach my class P.E and with that experience in mind looking back i was very naive and oblivious to the person he actually is . The Man would say so many stereotypical and racist stuff and cover it up as a joke or say it as if its a positive thing. Im going to get back to talking about the principal but for now let me talk about the rest of the staff. For one many of the teachers that i had dealt with would try and feed politics and their opinions onto us during those casual moments in class , or during moments of open discussion. And ofcourse there was the many racist remarks that were delivered as jokes or Facts. other than that most teachers were simply just teachers nothing really special about them other then some of them being closet racists. Next lets talk about the energy around the school. It was so obvious and very much present that there was a power division amongst the different staff members , almost as if there was a cult like system going on which only the "elite" teachers would benefit from. i say this because the few innocent and naive teachers that were there were at times forced to enforce certain rules or matter that you could clearly see that they werent comfortable with. That whole structure leads to what that power hungry principle wants and decides upon. this review seems way too colourful for one of a school but trust me im being vague .One reviewer i saw mentioned how the school focused way too much on the schools public image and i can back that 1000%. The principal is always getting into altercations with either students or his own staff and most related to racism, then he would do his best to cover up by manipulating with his crocodile tears and brainwashing the matric leaders so they can defend him on his behalf . the leader body was garbage , did nothing productive for the kids it was always about the schools PR. The leaderbody itself was mimicking the actual management of the school , very scandalous and major power hungry headboy and head girl. Next lets talk about how people of colour were always targeted over their hair. Caucasian students like would have very long hair and all these lavish hairstyles(side note i was one of them and it bothered me how people of colour were targeted ) the whole rule book is centred around african hairstyles whilst us straight haired people had free reign , some girls would have blonde and pink highlights or change their hair colour completely and not be reprimanded on it. im tired but let me finish off with the last bit of how the school tried programming us or bullying us into submission with certain opinions, beliefs and perceptions , the male staff members are so overly aggressive and try so hard to assert dominance and prove their masculinity , one teacher and head of grade in particular had rather more estrogen then testosterone because he tried so hard to prove himself , he had such an agenda against people with beards because he couldnt grow one himself ,he was an a class douchbag and underweight a hole who tried being like the cool business studies teacher whose name rhymes with cornetto(this man was an A class teacher best there was cornetto was a great teacher), but ye the principle was racist and called the ground staff the k word and if u search the schools name on youtube you can see him assualting a student and the school focused on all the sports that they arent good at whilst ignoring the ones that they were good at

Ver good school

As a proud student at Edenglen High School I think that it is a very good school with many opportunities. The teachers do care about their students and add light to our lives with their humour. The principal is a good man which takes the time to recognise his students. And as for the students obviously no school is perfect but they make sure to enforce discipline. Overall I know that it is an amazing school and I really love going there.

Can be improved with better management

Edenglen is an amazing school by appearance. However if looked at deeply, students suffer indirect bullying from staff. Although it may not seem important or valid, but the way in which uniform checks are conducted can have serious consequences on the self esteem of a student. Many students are very self conscious and prefer wearing their rain coats (they do have an edenglen label on) this allows learners to hide such aspects like hair on arms, excess weight, birth marks. Upper management refuses to allow learners to use this coat and have banned it to only rainy days. If worn on a windy day it will confiscated. Edenglen takes sport more seriously than culture. Most of the time the students that excel in culture are not properly acknowledged. Sports such as athletics and swimming are prioritised over soccer or tennis. Academically Edenglen high school is very capable and tries it’s best to motivate learners in terms of extra lessons, peer tutoring and psychologists on the premises.
Lockers are very packed and is congested. Bathrooms are of average condition.

Change to Eghs

Edenglen is a good school that has achieved excellent pass rates as well as sports results the problem is our children are told what to wear on civies we understand the concept of inappropriate dressing but this is honestly too much ...our kids dont have any fun events ....such as celebreties coming or people coming to talk to the kids about their daily lives ...most children complain about how its boring at school and how nothing fun happens...i encourage the principal to stop basing everything on sports and academics and do fun things for the learners ....so their highschool life is memorable ...as well as to bring camps back so our kids can explore and socialise ..

Good teachers, poor upper management.

Edenglen high school, was a wonderful place for learning, with brilliant, passionate teachers who made an effort to get to know their students and provide support on a personal level for them. My only complaint is the complete lack of proper management. The principal, who will remain unnamed, turned the school from a wonderful house of learning, into a school that was more focused on good PR and sports, than a place for academics. Favouritism was rampant and discipline lax for students that took part in sport activities.
