Started high school there and finished high school there.
As much fun I had at times , this school really does not know how to handle "controversial" topics eg Bullying, Racism , homophobia , Xenophobia, sexism or Islamophobia. when the school itself has had multiple "controversial issues within staff etc" ( student teacher affairs , teacher affairs , racism , sexism etc)
None of these issue were ever addressed in my 5 years of being in that school.
There's always been a racial favoring in the school , if you are not a scholar from a rich family , you will never be good enough in about 80% of the staff's eyes.
The children in all the grades all experienced bullying, theres certain dynamics and stature one needs to have to maintain popularity, kids can be so cruel, in my 5 years of being a student there , I knew so many kids struggling with anxiety and depression (mind you its always obvious ans staff could have done something about it ) due to bullying, favoritism and just blatantly giving no acknowledgement.
this school is entirely rugby focused and solely rugby focused not sure if they has anything to do with the olden day style beliefs of the staff but everyone i knew thought and said the same thing.
there were nice experiences sure , school tours etc , but those experiences always had to be dimmed by rude scholars , scholars with no manners or discipline and just straight up bullies . I got billed about 90% of people in my grade got bullied all throughout high school, the bullying started on our first day of grade 8 already not necessary but the matric staff that initiated us but by the older kids , got bullied just for being a grade 8 ?
"sokkies" and Bible study "hartklop" were something we all look forward to but the way the kids judge others never made it fun, someone was always getting made fun of for being "different" , not wearing the most expensive dress/clothes , not being the best dancer etc. somehow at every event , assembly , sports days , classes , exams etc someone always has a negative thing to say.
teachers were really not passionate about their job and took it out on the children , so many teachers did not care about their students unless they were achieving 90% marks , many teachers made rude and made unprovoked comments in classes. It was clear on the teachers faces and demeanor that they did not care to teach learners valuable information, sure one can have bad days but the occupation of being an educator requires passion and care.
in my time there was about 2 teachers that I had classes by , that has never uttered a singular bad thing about any student and treated students with love and care.
thank you for giving me an education, im eternally grateful for my privilege of getting an education but this school needs to make active decisions and contributions to students mental health by not praising other rich "well off" children , only rugby players which they are well aware about , build others up without putting others down and adress the bad behavior of not only the scholars but the staff as well.
As 'n leerder wat in 2020 by HSB matrikuleer het kon ek nie vir 'b beter plek gevra het om.my hoërskooljare te geniet nie. Van die onderwysers is regtig uitstekend. Die sport was lekker, die gees was briljant!!
Fantastiese skool waar elke kind tel. Onderwysers ken jou bd naam. Natuurlik met uitdagings soos by elke ander skool, maar hier tel jou stem nog. Veilig en uniek
I left this school with so much trauma. The school is riddled with bullies, with the bullies existing in both the student body and the staff members. The three - maybe four at best - teachers who do care are diamonds in the rough, exceptions and most certainly not the rule. It has a racist, sexist and homophobic culture. I heard students freely use racial slurs such as “k*ff*r” and the school never addressed or condemned racial slurs and racism. I heard teachers openly be racist, homophobic and sexist.
Academics were sub par at best. Some good teachers, but the school is heavily lacking in the mathematics and science sections, as well as business studies, etc. Oh and they don’t even offer history or art.
If you’re not a rugby player or maybe netball player, your sport will not receive adequate attention or even money or other resources. If you’re not a cookie cutter perfect student in the staffs eyes, they will not encourage you or invest the same energy in you. Instead they will try to crush your spirit.
I left this school depressed, anxious and crushed. I was not the same person who entered a few years prior - the schools culture was detrimental to my physical and mental well-being. I had been bullied, oppressed and crushed. I don’t have many regrets in life. However, the little good that came out of this school (my meeting of some people who became friends) is far outweighed by the bad. I wish I could go back to being 13 and look at HSB and run as far as I could in the other direction. I still, many years later, suffer from anxiety thanks to my experiences there. I often dream that I am straight back in high school where teachers put me down for no reason and where I am made to feel inadequate, unworthy and undeserving.
Kinda bad...not all students get the same amount of attention and some get treated better than others for no reason... Some teachers aren't qualified and some are just rude... Children bully alot and some are very disrespectful... The curriculum is not the best and math is bad,in my class the teacher says almost nothing and expects u to know what's shes explaining on the whiteboard... The principle is rude and talks about students in front of others and calls them out for stuff they have done in the past... Some stuff are very disorganized and if u enter some classrooms u'll see clutter and disorganization.
